Re: Tether cable - my experience

I need a tether cable for my Canon R5 for usage at home, do i really need to use the TetherTools cables or can i just use a generic USB-C cable say 5m ?

Hi,

I've used Tethertool cables for several years now.

The tethertools website does give some explanation to what cable you should get.

My experience is that the device which you tether to is just as important as the cable. An underpowered hub may not be stable if you have to transmit data across some length.

Hence I believe the best scenario is to use a Thunderbolt hub with cables suitable for Thunderbolt 3. In fact you can also get now Thunderbolt 4 cables. I have used non-tethertools, thunderbolt 4 cables i bought from Aliexpress with great success.

i do not recommend the Tethertools Booster with USB3 hubs, i found it to be still unstable.

Also just beware if your computer only has USB hubs, you may not to try different hubs to see which one has more power. The more power the hub has the more stable the connection.

When buying cables, make sure it is for data transfer, not only for charging.

I currently use 1.8m, 3m and 4.6m tethertools cable with Macbook Pro 2021 and GFX100s. No issues at all to transmit RAW files.

Hope this helps
